HELPING VERBS (AUXILIARY VERBS)

Definition:

Helping verbs assist the main verb in expressing tense, aspect, voice, mood, negatives, and questions.

Primary Auxiliary Verbs

1. BE

Am, Is, Are, Was, Were, Be, Being, Been

Examples:

She is studying.

They were playing.

The work has been completed.

2. HAVE

Has, Have, Had

Examples:

I have finished my homework.

She has written a letter.

They had left before I arrived.

3. DO

Do, Does, Did

Examples:

Do you speak English?

Does he live in Delhi?

Did they attend the meeting?

Functions of Helping Verbs

• Form Continuous Tenses

She is reading.

• Form Perfect Tenses

He has completed the task.

• Form Questions

Do you understand?

• Form Negative Sentences

They do not smoke.

• Give Emphasis

I do believe you.

She did finish the work.

Subject + Helping Verb + Main Verb + Object
